More about Vista

What's a nice OS

I tried to use Vista to write DVD today. But alas, as all Microsoft software it designed weird. After about 10 minutes of preparation files for burning (???), the process started. However it finished a bit faster than I expected with 5 minutes finalizing statge. I took a look at a disk and saw only about 50% of recorded area, when in should be around 90%. The disk was unreadable after. Fortunately Roxio burner worked fine under Vista, so I spoiled only one disk.

Windows Vista

How far from release?

I've installed the latest RC2. I have mixed feeling after. From one side system seems working with acceptable performance, has many nice graphical effects, refreshed applications and new features. From other side new security constraints created completely mess, so I can't access files or run programs. What's a surprise; the installation took my domain name and interpreted it as a user name giving it a full access to everything. Although my login has administrative role on this machine it seems insufficient to provide many administrative functions and give access to some files. From this point system looks sort of closed for managing, because nobody can override certain constraints. Attempting to propagate new set of ownership from root folder fails due limitation of administrator rights. Actually I like that a user can keep some information private and even administrators can't access it, however from other side system created some powerful users and installation time and closed control of them. I hope to get some solution how to rearrange ownership and access control of entire installation.
