Windows after Vista will be ...
Linux based?
Do not make your eyes wide open. It isn't confirmed yet, but... All facts tell that Redmond is seriously looking to get Linux as a base of next Windows. There is no secret that Vista tolerates failure. Zero day security holes are just evidence of weakness of the design. Although Microsoft officials claim that Vista is the most secure Windows ever, it doesn't mean that it is secure at all. This version has not lived up to expectations. I use Vista for a bit more than two months. Some nice UI features are certainly attractive, however internally it seems can't cope with complexity, some features suddenly stop working and then can start working again after some time. I need to reinstall my VPN client once a week, because it stops working with no reason. OS itself all time is doing something consuming about %30 CPU and over 600MB RAM. Certainly Microsoft knows much more about internal problem of this new Gizmo. What about enterprise side? Vista is certainly not enterprise OS and can't manage server tasks. Redmond is expecting a big fiasco in server OS battle. Windows 2003 has serious resource planning issues, so most of enterprise customers consider only Solaris or Linux even running on not so fast hardware. You may noticed an interest of Microsoft to Novell and recently established partnership. Marketing of Microsoft seriously looking to get support new Microsoft appliances as Zune on Linux. Actually Microsoft started supporting all open source development for Linux. A reason is simple. Microsoft is seriously thinking about this big jump. How this giant is going to make money on free software? An answer is quite simple. Microsoft doesn't make a big profit from selling retail version of Windows. Big guys are trying to fight piracy without big success. However OEM and enterprise Windows give a huge cash flow. So selected approach is charging for every pre-installed Linux based Windows (OEM) will work perfectly. Enterprise version benefits are even bigger, here Microsoft can seriously expect a big sales growing. Selecting Linux as next Windows platform also kills potential competitors, like VMWare (it becomes useless) and Google with projected version of own Linux (Microsoft certainly has better team and experience in OS niche).
